PAS125 Explained
PAS125 is actually a very simple specification. However, you will probably find it very hard to work out the requirements from the document itself, because it describes what needs doing but does not desribe how it should be done.
Although this can be iritating, it is actually done for a reason. The specification is purposely non-prescriptive, which means, as long as all requirements are satisfied, you can do them your way.
For example, there is a requirement to have a documented recruitment process, but the specification doesn't stipulate the content required. Now, you will already have a recruitment process, but if it is not documented then we'll have to type it up.
The specification has been described as the four 'M's: Man, Machine, Materials, Methods.
PAS125 Requirements - Man
People involved in repair process tasks need to be competent to carry out the tasks assigned to them. There is a requirement that they are either qualified or under the supervision of a qualified person in the relevant discipline, such as MET, Panel, Paint or Estimating. There are some repair tasks thet cannot be done under supervision, such as glazing, air conditioning and welding/bonding.
PAS125 Requirements - Machine
Equipment needs to be suitable and capable for the tasks it is being used for. Evidence is required to demonstrate this, and records need to be available to demonstrate that the equipment is maintained in accordance with the makers' recomendations. Similarly, records must be available to demonstrate that measuring equipment, such as torque wrenches and tyre gauges are recalibrated periodically.
PAS125 Requirements - Materials
Materials need to suitable and capable for the repair tasks being carried out. Evidence will be required to demonstrate that parts and materials are either OE or of equal quality. In addition, materials with a shelf life need to have the expiry date prominently marked on the container.
PAS125 Requirements - Methods
Methods take many forms. They include your QC Sheets, Job Cards, Delivery Notes, Invoices, Estimates etc.. They also take the form of written processes, audit reports , declarations, training records and job descriptions (this is not a complete list). Additionally, methods refers to recognised repair process methods, such as those available on manufacturers' websites, which explain the method of repair and provide technical information, such as torque settings and Wheel Alignment data. The can be obtained from various sources at various prices.
